Error description
Currently installed is Websphere Application Server V7.0 and TAM 7.0 Client is wanting to upgrade Websphere Application Server with a fix pack. When the Update Installer is run the following error is found in the updatetrace.log - 2011.09.28 18:54:56.005 CDT java.lang.NullPointerException at com.ibm.ws.install.ni.ismp.utils.UPDIMultipleMaintenancePackageU tils.getAPARsFromNIFStackExcludeToBeUninstalled(UPDIMultipleMain tenancePackageUtils.java:589) at com.ibm.ws.install.ni.ismp.panels.cache.UPDIMultipleMaintenanceP ackageSelectionStackManager.getInstalledAndSelectedAPARsExcludeT obeUninstalledByCurrentFPorRPandSeclectedFPorRP(UPDIMultipleMain tenancePackageSelectionStackManager.java:455) at com.ibm.ws.install.ni.ismp.panels.cache.UPDIMultipleMaintenanceP ackageSelectionRules.MaintenanceAPARPrereqExreqChecking(UPDIMult ipleMaintenancePackageSelectionRules.java:399) -- truncated --- - Note that the error is stating that it is gathering data from the NIFStack with the statement, getAPARSFromNIFStackExcludeToBeUninstalled. During the gathering process it reviews each stanza in the NIFStack.xml file. It finds an entry that is for TAM.Dmgr.pak in one environment and TAM.DSess.pak in another environment during a separate update process. These stanza's are missing a parameter called <param name="packagetype" value="NA"/> - This entry within the stanza would have allowed the Update Iinstaller to bypass its normal matching process. Instead it produces the aforementioned error.
Local fix
As a workaround IBM support will guide the client to edit the NIFStack.xml, found in the following directory Websphere_Home/properties/version/nif/backup. The client will add the following entry within the stanza for TAM.Dmgr.pak or TAM.DSess.pak <param name="packagetype" value="NA"/> Save the NIFStack.xml file and retry the upgrade.
Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: Only users of IBM WebSphere Application * * Server V7.0 who applied pak files which did * * not have the "pakcagetype" metadata. * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Update Installed will fail when * * installing Fix Packs if there are pak * * files without "packagetype" meta data * * installed. * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: * **************************************************************** Meta data missing in some pak files causes Update Installer failure.
Problem conclusion
Enhanced Update Installer to handle the case that there is a pak file without "packagetype" meta data installed. The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in fix pack 7.0.0.23.
