Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: All users of IBM WebSphere Application * * Server Network Deployment edition * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Increasing numbers of workload * * managemetn (WLM) runtime objects * * could eventually cause an * * out-of-memory condition in proxy * * servers. * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: * **************************************************************** Java heap dumps may show as a leak suspect class com.ibm.ws.cluster.selection.rule.RuleEtiquette, and heap analysis could show a large number of objects RuleEtiquette, SelectionAdvisor, and SelectionCriteriaImpl.
Problem conclusion
In the 6.1, 7.0 and 8.0 fixpack releases, logic was added to avoid duplicate entries in a cache of com.ibm.wsspi.cluster.adapter.channel.ChannelTarget instances. This will keep the number of related objects such as SelectionAdvisor, SelectionCriteriaImpl and RuleEtiquette to a minimum. Also in the 6.1, 7.0 and 8.0 fixpack releases, logic was added to dramatically reduce the size of RuleEtiquette objects when WLM tracing is not enabled. In the 6.1 and 7.0 fixpack releases, an additional change was made to further avoid memory leaks in a proxy server. This is a back-port of an 8.0.0.1 change to add synchronization around the instantiation of SelectionAdvisor instances, in order to prevent duplicate instances and therefore duplicate entries in a HashMap. In the 6.1 fixpack release, an additional change was made to fix the equals() method on com.ibm.wsspi.cluster.selection.rule.EndPointRule. This is a back-port of PM16868. The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in fix packs 6.1.0.43, 7.0.0.23 and 8.0.0.3.
