Error description

  • Starting with Microsoft Windows Vista, and continuing with
Windows 7, Windows Server 2008, and Windows Server 2008 R2,
Microsoft introduced the UAC feature as well as the concept of
"filtered tokens". This means that Microsoft Windows systems
are configured, by default, to require elevated privileges to
write to the Program Files directories as well as other
important system directories. This is true even when logged
into a system as an administrative user.

By default, WebSphere Application Server V7 and V8 store several
configuration files in the same directory structure as the
product data files. If the product is installed to the default
location on Microsoft Windows (under Program Files or Program
Files (x86) ), then some product tools as well as application
server process may require privilege escalation in order to
write to those configuration files. This can cause
undesirable complications for installing and maintaining the
    product.

This APAR is associated with an enhancement to allow some
product configuration files to be written to a different
location, outside WAS_HOME. This will help allow WebSphere
Application Server V7 and V8 to be more compatible with the
Microsoft Windows UAC and "filtered token" concepts. It will
help avoid complications associated with installing the
product to the Program Files directories on Microsoft Windows
Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008, and Windows Server 2008
    R2.

Local fix

  • Installing the product to a directory outside the Program Files
directories helps avoid the complications described above.

Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: All users of IBM WebSphere Application *
    *                  Server                                      *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Non-administrative users are unable to *
    * use administrator created profiles *
    * without manual authorization steps *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************
Currently administrators are required to set permissions on
various files and directories within administrator created
profiles in order for use by non-administrative users.

Problem conclusion

  • The fix consists of supporting WebSphere Application Server
installation to non-Program Files locations (and the
    associated non-Administrative access right semantics).
Additionally, permissions related problems with Apache ant
tasks "Replace" and "ReplaceRegExp" were fixed (the new fixed
    behavior is optional via the
    WS_USE_ENHANCED_OPENSOURCE_BEHAVIOUR property located in
    the wasprofile.properties file).

The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in
fix packs 7.0.0.23 and 8.0.0.4. Please refer to the
