APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • When using the WebSphere Application Server administrative
console to set a trace specification you are not warned if you
have entered (possibly from a copy / paste operation) hex
control characters like Carriage return and Line feed.

Then later at runtime when the trace is being enabled (when the
JVM starts) the trace specification is parsed and the hex
characters can cause segments of the trace specification to be
considered invalid and therefore not take effect.

In the trace.log or SystemOut.log these hex characters sometimes
show up as question marks (?).

Local fix

  • Use a text editor that shows hex characters like CR LF etc to
view / edit your trace spec before putting it in the admin
    console.

    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************
You can accidently put white space characters into component
names when you copy and paste trace specification from
documentation. Although white space characters in component
names are valid their use is not a common practice.

Problem conclusion

  • The fix causes a warning message to be shown to you when white
space characters are present in component names of the
    provided trace specification.

The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in
fix packs 7.0.0.25, 8.0.0.5, and 8.5.0.1. Please refer to the
