PM63584: UPDATE INSTALLER THROWS OUT OF MEMORY ERROR BUT REPORTS SUCCESS IN GUI

APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • Invalid success message shown in Update Installer GUI when an
    OutOfMemory error is thrown during fix pack upgrade.
    
    
    To reproduce:
    system:  aix, p7 64 bit
    
    Disable jit (EXPORT JAVA_COMPILER=NONE)
    Disable filespacechecking (-DdisableDiskSpaceCheck=True)
    
     A) export JAVA_COMPILER=NONE
    
     B) ./update.sh -DdisableDiskSpaceCheck=True
        - GUI was successfully invoked
        - Clicked Next button 6 times to the Installation Summary
    titled
        panel (did not select/check the 'verify permissions' box)
        - Installation of Fix Pack 21 begins and progresses
        - The GUI reflects the install was successful
    
     C) A versionInfo reflects Fix Pack 17 is installed
    
    Local Fix:
    Not known but if user increases memory high enough updi will
    recover and install fixpack correctly.

Problem summary

    *                      even though there are OutofMemory       *
    *                      errors or NullPointerExceptions during  *

    Update Installer didn't handle the OutOfMemory error properly
    and didn't return the correct return code in this situation.
    

Problem conclusion

  • Update Installer has been enhanced to handle the Out of Memory
    error correctly and return the error code properly.
    
    
    The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in
    fix pack 7.0.0.25.  Please refer to the Recommended Updates
