Error description
Installation Manager hangs after selecting the Update button and choosing an installed WebSphere Application Server installation. After this choice, press the next button and Installation Manager hangs. This can happen in silent install also. Javacore generated on Installation manager shows the following code : java/lang/Object.wait(Native Method) java/lang/Object.wait(Object.java:167) java/lang/UNIXProcess.waitFor(UNIXProcess.java:115) com/ibm/ws/detect/running/process/v80/DetectRunningProcessSelect or.checkRunningProcess(DetectRunningProcessSelector.java:220) com/ibm/ws/detect/running/process/v80/DetectRunningProcessSelect or.isRunningProcessDetected(DetectRunningProcessSelector.java:18 2) com/ibm/ws/detect/running/process/v80/DetectRunningProcessSelect or.evaluate(DetectRunningProcessSelector.java:124) com/ibm/cic/common/core/model/internal/SelectionExpression$WithB undle.evaluate(SelectionExpression.java:234) com/ibm/cic/common/core/model/internal/SelectionOperator$AndOp.e xecute(SelectionOperator.java:143) com/ibm/cic/common/core/model/internal/SelectionExpression$WithO perator.evaluate(SelectionExpression.java:86) Installation Manager log also might have a message like "Running processes have been detected that may interfere with the current operation. Stop all WebSphere and related processes before continue." This happens if the Java processes on the application server are running. Once they are stopped then the update goes fine.

Stop all java processes and then try the update

Problem conclusion
A timeout is added to the detect running process bundle to prevent it from hanging. The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in fix packs 8.0.0.5 and 8.5.0.1.
