Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: All users of IBM WebSphere Application * * Server Liberty Profile using OSGi * * applications containing web application * * bundles (WABs). * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: An OSGi application containing a WAB * * can fail to start correctly. * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: * **************************************************************** An OSGi application containing a WAB may fail to start completely. Timing conditions when installing an OSGi application containing one or more WABs could cause start events to be missed and the OSGi application may fail to report as started. During application install the OSGi application framework may try to find additional packages from features to be able to resolve OSGi application dependencies. This process can cause OSGi applications to be restarted. In the case of an OSGi application containing a WAB the application restart can cause the WAB bundle to be undeployed and redeployed. As a result the EBA start check may wait for a deployment notification from a WAB that could never arrive due to the undeployment.
Problem conclusion
In order to solve this problem a number of fixes were required: 1. The synchronization of the code around the deploy and undeploy of WABs was improved. 2. The OSGi application framework now performs a package refresh on activation to avoid it always being necessary on first application installation. 3. Synchronization improvements around the OSGi application framework refresh to avoid clashes during multiple EBA installs. 4. The OSGi application framework refresh now waits for existing install actions (including WAB deployment) to finish before progressing. 5. The OSGi application framework refresh now does not commence until the complete removal of partially installed OSGi applications (including undeployment of WABs). 6. WAB events were improved to coincide with bundle lifecycle events and provide better failure notification. 7. The detection of WAB events by the EBA application handler was improved. The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in fix pack 8.5.0.1.
