    *                      it tries to retrieve the SSL engine     *
    *                      but does not check to see if it         *
    *                      exists first.                           *

    When the SSL engine is shutting down it tries to retrieve the
    SSL engine but does not check to see if it exists first. This
    leads to the NullPointerException.
