  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • Since the switch from the Commons Expression Language (EL)
    code to unified EL code in the WebSphere Application Server
    V7.0 and above used by the JSP Container, the previously
    available mechanism of controlling EL caching through the
    com.ibm.wsspi.jsp.disableElCache WebContainer custom property
    was removed. However, the Commons EL implementation is still
    shipped with WebSphere Application Server and in some cases
    still used by customer applications.
    This APAR restores that EL caching control at the JVM level
    with a new custom property.

Local fix

  • modify application code to use the newer unified EL libraries

Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: IBM WebSphere Application Server Version *
    *                  7.0, 8.0 and 8.5 users of Apache Commons    *
    *                  EL.                                         *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Applications directly importing *
    * Apache Commons EL classes will have *
    * their expressions, values, and any *
    * converted values cached by the *
    * expression evaluator with no regard *
    *                      to size.                                *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************
    Applications that directly use the Commons EL
    ExpressionEvaluator implementation class will have each unique
    expression it evaluates cached in a hash map, as well as
    expressions converted value. This can lead to a lot of memory
    consumption for applications that have a large number of
    unique expressions which in some cases can lead to out of
    memory conditions.

Problem conclusion

  • The Commons EL code packaged in WebSphere Application Server
    was modified to allow the caching to be bypassed. To bypass
    the cache, the following JVM custom property must be set to
    true:

    property: com.ibm.disableCommonsElCache
    values:  true / false (default)

    The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in
    fix packs 7.0.0.29, 8.0.0.6, and 8.5.0.2. Please refer to the
