Error description
The portlet container plugin.xml contains invalid characters. Normally this does not constitute any problem. Some third party XML parsers may throw an exception when reading the plugin.xml during initialization of the portlet container component. In this case the portlet container component will not get initialized; the portlet container as well as the administrative console will not be available.

Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: All users of IBM WebSphere Application * * Server V8.0 and V8.5 * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: The portlet container plugin.xml * * contains invalid characters. This * * will cause some third party XML * * parsers to fail. * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: * **************************************************************** One comment in the plugin.xml contains wrongly encoded, unintentional characters. These characters are normally ignored by the XML parser. Some third party XML parsers may throw an exception when parsing the file. If this occurs during server startup, that is, during portlet container component initialization, the portlet container fails to initialize. The administrative console relies on the portlet container and will fail also.
Problem conclusion
The invalid characters in the plugin.xml file are removed. The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in fix pack s8.0.0.6 and 8.5.0.2. Please refer to the Recommended Updates page for delivery information: http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=180&uid=swg27004980
