Error description

  • Some of the WebSphere Application Server for z/OS customization

    (or the zpmt.sh command) will fail if the user running the jobs
    does not have write permission to the /tmp directory.

    *                  Server for z/OS Version 8.5.                *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: The customization jobs generated by *
    * the Profile Management Tool for z/OS *
    * write temporary files into the /tmp *
    *                      directory.                              *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************
    Some of the customization jobs generated by the Profile
    Management Tool for z/OS write temporary files into the /tmp
    directory. The jobs that generate these temporary files will
    fail if the user running the jobs does not have write
    permission to the /tmp directory.

Problem conclusion

  • For each customization job that writes files to the /tmp
    directory, the Profile Management Tool for z/OS will generate
    an alternate job that will write temporary files in the
    directory specified by the TMPDIR environment variable. If the
    TMPDIR environment variable is not defined, then the /tmp
    directory is used.

    The alternate jobs that use the TMPDIR environment variable
    will only work for customizing configuration images that are
    associated with installation images that are at a Fix Pack
    level after 8.5.0.2. The original jobs that write to the /tmp
    directory will work for all version 8.5 Fix Pack levels,
    provided the user running the jobs has write permission to the
    /tmp directory.

    Note that part of the fix for this defect is delivered in the
    WebSphere Customization Toolkit service level that follows the
    8.5.0.2 Fix Pack and part of the fix for this defect is
    delivered in the WebSphere Application Server for z/OS service
    level that follows the 8.5.0.2 Fix Pack level. Both parts of
    the fix are required to run the alternate customization jobs
    that do not use the /tmp directory. However, any WebSphere
    Application Server for z/OS V8.5 service level can be
    customized by jobs generated from any WebSphere Customization
    Toolkit V8.5 Fix Pack level.

    The instructions generated by the updated Profile Management
    Tool for z/OS reference the alternate jobs (that do not write
    files into the /tmp directory) and state the requirements for
    running these jobs.

    As previously noted, APAR PM76993 is currently targeted for
    inclusion in the Fix Pack that follows the 8.5.0.2 Fix Pack
    level of WebSphere Application Server for z/OS V8.5 and the
    Fix Pack level that follows the 8.5.0.2 service level of
    WebSphere Customization Toolkit V8.5.
