APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • A customer migrating from WebSphere Application Server 8.0.0.1
    to 8.5 encountered a hang in the PREUPGRD step of job BBOWDPRE.
    The customer expects the BBOWDPRE job to run to completion
    without hanging.
    

Local fix

  • Currently, the customer is running the BBOWMG3D job,
    which is a single job that runs all the migration steps.  The
    alternative is to break down the BBOWMG3D job into separate
    processes.  BBOWMG3D may be split into 3 main steps consisting
    of:
    BBOWDPRO
    BBOWDPRE
    BBOWDPOS
    The Deployment Manager should be stopped
    - before running the BBOWDPRE job and started back up again
    - before running the BBOWDPOS job.

    The BBOWDPRE job would hang if the Deployment Manager was
    running
    when the job was started. A certificate exchange error might
    show
    up in the logs.
    

Problem conclusion

  • A change was required in PreUpgrade step that requires the
    Deployment Manager to be stopped and started again. If
    administrative security was enabled, this information was
    needed
    to stop the Deployment Manager. The change to pass the
    information on z/OS was not completed properly.
    
    APAR PM82458 is currently targeted for inclusion in Fix
    Pack 8.5.5 of WebSphere Application Server V8.5.
