Abstract

SHARE presentation material for session 8236.

IBM offers tools that let enterprise developers adapt existing COBOL business applications so that they can efficiently convert XML messages into native COBOL data and transform COBOL data into XML messages. These tools use the new high-performance XML parsing capabilities and XML GENERATE statement of the IBM Enterprise COBOL compiler as well as existing COBOL language constructs to achieve the conversion tasks. The tools also generate sample COBOL programs and the XML description (XML Schema) files that define the content of the messages.

The presentation materials below describe IBM's XML tools in detail and demonstrate that effective leveraging of existing COBOL assets and skills can contribute to measurable productivity gains while providing functionality essential to a modern business application.
