Abstract
When using the EMC Symmetrix, if there are any managed mdisks which are in scheme 2 or 3 then please contact IBM Support immediately.
Content
When configuring the EMC Symmetrix and Symmetrix DMX, the LUN Unique IDs are reported in one of three ways:
Scheme 1: 16 byte UID no header.
Scheme 2: NAA header, 16 byte UID, Rel Tgt PortID header, 4 byte Rel Tgt Port.
Scheme 3: NAA header, 16 byte UID.
All 3 schemes are right padded with zeroes to 32 bytes (64 hexadecimal characters).
Example:
The SPC-2 setting in the EMC Symmetrix/DMX affects the scheme used.
Scheme 1 is obtained by disabling SPC-2; this is the recommended setting.
If you have any managed mdisks which are in scheme 2 or 3 then please contact IBM Support immediately. Do NOT attempt to change the scheme to scheme 1, as this may result in a loss of access and possible data corruption.
If you plan to upgrade your EMC Symmetrix firmware, then you should
contact EMC to verify that the method of reporting Unique Identifiers will not
change between any of the three schemes as a result of that upgrade.
