Preventive Service Planning

Abstract

Configuration Information for Sony AIT-2, AIT-3, AIT-3Ex, AIT-4, and AIT-5 Drives

Content

Sony SDX-500C (AIT-2 or AIT130)
Sony SDX-500V (AIT-2)
Sony SDX-700C (AIT-3 or AIT260)
Sony SDX-700V (AIT-3)
Sony SDX-800V (AIT-3Ex)
Sony SDX-900V (AIT-4)
Sony SDX-1100 (AIT-5)

1. When defining a device class for any generation of Sony AIT drives, i.e. AIT, AIT-2, AIT-3, AIT-4, or AIT-5, use

  • DEVType=8MM
  • FORMAT=<DRIVE | AIT | AITC>
    Example:

    DEFine DEVclass devclassname DEVType=8MM FORMAT=AIT .....
    DEFine DEVclass devclassname DEVType=8MM FORMAT=AITC .....

AIT - Specifies that the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager server writes data that uses the AIT recording format.

AITC - Specifies that the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager server writes data that uses the AIT recording format with compression.

2. Sony AIT WORM capable drives can be used as Read/Write or WORM drives. To use them as WORM drives, when defining a device class, use WORM=Yes.
    Example:

    DEFine DEVclass devclassname DEVType=8MM FORMAT=DRIVE WORM=Yes

3. To use Sony AIT WORM capable drives as Read/Write drives, when defining a device class, do not specify the WORM parameter, or use WORM=No.
    Example:

    DEFine DEVclass devclassname DEVType=8MM FORMAT=DRIVE WORM=No

4. Only WORM media can be used for WORM storage pool, and only RW media can be used for RW storage pool.

5. When checking in WORM volumes, use checklabel=yes. Otherwise, they will be checked in as RW volumes.

6. Storage pools assigned to the 8MM device class have a default reclamation value of 60. To prevent reclamation of WORM media, set the reclamation value to 100.

7. Sony AIT drives can not be defined for use as WORM drives through the Device Configuration wizard on Windows. The drives will have to be defined through IBM Tivoli Storage Manager commands.

8. Capacity
AIT-2: 50GB native capacity and approximately 130GB with 2.6:1 compression.
AIT-3: 100GB native capacity and approximately 260GB with 2.6:1 compression.
AIT-3Ex: 150GB native capacity and approximately 390GB with 2.6:1 compression.
AIT-4: 200GB native capacity and approximately 520GB with 2.6:1 compression.
AIT-5: 400GB native capacity and approximately 1040GB with 2.6:1 compression.

11. All Sony AIT drives report serial numbers.

12. The CLEAN DRIVE command is not supported with Sony SDX-800V drive.

Mixing RW and WORM media

RW and WORM media can be in the same library. However, 2 device classes--RW and WORM, must be defined.

Since Sony AIT RW drives do not recognize WORM media, all drives in the library must be WORM capable if WORM media will be used.

See "Supported Devices for AIX, HP-UX, Solaris and Windows" or "Supported Devices for Linux" for minimum supported version levels and platforms for these devices.

More information regarding device configuration is available in the Tivoli Storage Manager Administrator's Guide, which can be found in the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager information center.
