APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • sb_max represents an upper bound for the network option
    values tcp_sendspace, tcp_recvspace, udp_sendspace,
udp_recvspace; the "no" command however permits setting
sb_max to a value lower than the values it bounds.

One impact of this is to cause inetd to exit when it
encounters failures on socket API calls. Other network
applications are also likely to be affected similarly
when sb_max is thus erroneously changed.

Local fix

  • When reducing sb_max, at no point should it be set
to a value less than any of the send/recv space
    parameters.
Any of these parameters that exceed the prospective value
of sb_max should be reduced to a value not exceeding the
    new sb_max value first.

Problem summary

  • Setting sb_max's value lesser than its dependents values can
make further sockets calls to fail.

Problem conclusion

  • Appropriate code changes made to prevent sb_max from setting
to a value lesser than its dependents.
