APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • In a shared external storage environment (such as a
multiple VIOS environment), disk errors may be logged on
the partner node while booting a system from migration
media or a migration image.  In the case of SAN attached
storage, the partner node will log SC_DISK_ERR4 errors.

Additionally, in a Virtual I/O environment, the errors
may cause a VIO client using the disk to unexpectedly
crash.

While scanning the system for candidate rootvg disks to
migrate, the blvset command is opening the disk with a
reserve when reading off the OS information.

Local fix

  • Disable connections to external shared disks before
booting the system from migration media.

Problem summary

  • An AIX installation or migration will cause SCSI reservation
errors on other systems in a shared-disk (SAN) environment.

Problem conclusion

  • blvset should use openx() with the SC_NO_RESERVE flag to open
disks devices.
