Error description

  • multibos -V varies on volume groups so it can verify they
are valid. The volume groups are varied back off and the
    filesystems remain in /etc/filesystems.

If the varyonvg fails the logical volumes with that
    volume group are removed.
A standby volume group on a standby HACMP client will
    fall into this category.

In an HACMP Cluster on a Volume Group that is varied on
as concurrent Active/Passive, the Passive node will show
the volume group as not varied on, multibos will do a
varyonvg on the volume group, knocking out the
    Active node.
This can show up as Reservation Conflicts.

In a non-HACMP environment with concurrent volume groups
when multibos does the varyonvg it will block out all the
other nodes placing locks on the volume group.

Local fix

Problem summary

  • The mbverify function of multibos -V option during boot clears
out defunct stanzas in /etc/filesystems. For filesystems on
varied off volume groups the volume groups are varied on and
their filesystems checked against /etc/filesystems. If a system
is part of High Availability setup and contains concurrent
volume groups the act of varying on and off may affect the
    HA UP status.

Problem conclusion

  • This change checks for concurrent volume groups on a system and
if found will not setup the mbverify multibos -V call in
    /etc/inittab.
