Error description

  • Some errors are mishandled in mod_charset_lite. This may result
in the correct error response not being sent to the client or
a good HTTP response code (200) being incorrectly logged in the
access log when an error occurred. An HTTP 413 (request body
is too large) error is one example of an error that can be
    mishandled.

Local fix

Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: IBM HTTP SERVER configurations which use *
    * mod_charset_lite to translate web content to different *
    * character sets, such as from EBCDIC to ASCII *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: In certain error situations like when *
    * the incoming HTTP request is malformed, IHS generates "error *
    * buckets" containing the HTTP error code. mod_charset_lite *
    * was treating these as normal data buckets which caused much *
    * of IHS's error processing to be bypassed. An error message *
    * may appear in the error log but the access log may contain *
    * a normal HTTP 200 response code and the browser may not *
    * receive the expected ErrorDocument. *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION: Apply this fix if mod_charset_lite is *
    * enabled.                                                     *
    ****************************************************************
mod_charset_lite can cause some HTTP errors to be handled
    incorrectly.

Problem conclusion

  • mod_charset_lite has been changed to recognize and properly
handle error buckets and other metadata buckets.
