Error description

  • A slow memory leak could occur on z/OS systems when the IBM
    HTTP Server is configured to request client certificates.
    This is neither the default nor a typical IBM HTTP Server
    configuration.

Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: Users running IBM HTTP Server on z/OS *
    * systems where it has been configured to request client *
    * certificates (via the 'SSLClientAuth' directive with a value *
    * of any of 'optional|required|1|2' )                          *

    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: A slow memory leak can occur on z/OS *
    * systems running IBM HTTP Server that is configured to request*
    * client SSL certificates.                                     *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION: Apply this fix on z/OS if your IBM HTTP *
    * Server is configured to ask the client for an SSL certificate*
    ****************************************************************
    This problem occured due to differences between z/OS and the
    distributed platforms in the behavior of the API used to request
    client certificate details for a given connection.

Problem conclusion

  • Explicit API calls were added to free the certificate details
    for z/OS systems only. The free occurs implicitly on
    distributed platforms at the end of the connection.

    This fix is targeted for IHS fixpacks:
     - 6.1.0.25
     - 7.0.0.5

Temporary fix

  • Since the problem only occurs for configurations where the
    client is asked for an SSL certificate as a result of the
    'SSLClientAuth' directve setting, you could set the value to
    'none' ('0'), or remove this from the configuration entirely
    to avoid the problem.
