Local fix

Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: IBM HTTP SERVER configurations which set *
    * Vary response headers in applications or in the IHS *
    * configuration and also use mod_deflate to compress those *
    * responses                                                    *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: mod_deflate sets the Vary response *
    * header to Accept-Encoding, instead of merging *
    * Accept-Encoding into an existing Vary response header, so *
    * the Vary information previously set is lost *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION: Apply this fix if mod_deflate is enabled and *
    * a custom Vary response header is required. *
    ****************************************************************
In some situations, an application response may require a Vary
response header to indicate to a cache that the response can
vary based on the value of a specified request header. If for
example the response can differ based on the Accept-Language
request header field, then the application would include
    Accept-Language in the Vary response.
mod_deflate needs to indicate that the exact response can
vary based on whether or not Accept-Encoding was in the request,
so it should add Accept-Encoding to the existing Vary.
Unfortunately, it set Vary to Accept-Encoding instead of
adding Accept-Encoding to the existing list, thus breaking
applications which needed to set Vary.

Problem conclusion

  • mod_deflate was updated to merge Accept-Encoding into any
existing Vary response header. If there is no Vary response
header, one will be added which is set simply to
    Accept-Encoding.
