Troubleshooting
Problem
This technote explains why creating an IBM® Rational® ClearCase® view results with the error []Unable to create security descriptor the security id structure is invalid[] along with the steps to resolve the problem.
Cause
The following error appears when attempting to create a new ClearCase view:
Unable to create security descriptor the security id structure is invalid
Unable to create directory <path-to-view-storage> invalid argument
Unable to create view
The CLEARCASE_PRIMARY_GROUP User Environment Variable was set to the wrong group.
See technote 1135509 for more information about the CLEARCASE_PRIMARY_GROUP variable.
Resolving The Problem
Set the CLEARCASE_PRIMARY_GROUP User Environment Variable to the correct group.
Windows® 2000 & XP:
- Right-click My Computer and select Properties
- Select the Advanced tab
- Click the Environment Variables button
- Click New... under the User variables for username
- Set the Variable Name to CLEARCASE_PRIMARY_GROUP (NOTE: this must be all upper case)
- Set the Variable Value to Domain\group (Where Domain is equal to the Domain name and group is equal to the VOBs primary group)
- Click OK > OK > OK to accept the change
Windows NT 4.0:
- Right-click My Computer and select Properties
- Select the Environment tab
- In the second window row for User Variables select one of the existing variables
- Enter the Variable CLEARCASE_PRIMARY_GROUP, writing over the existing information. (Note: This EV must be all upper case)
- Enter the Variable Domain\group, writing over the existing information. (Where Domain is equal to the Domain name and group is equal to the VOBs primary group)
- Click Set > Apply > OK to accept the changes.
Note: Setting the CLEARCASE_PRIMARY_GROUP variable only affects the primary group for ClearCase operations. Hence, the Windows primary group for the user account will be in effect for all operations outside of ClearCase.
